The listing system, which began in the middle of the 20th century, is operated by Historic England for the purpose of preserving the historical and cultural significance of certain old buildings. The National Heritage List for England identifies every listed building in England, along with information about why it’s listed. In most cases, listed status protects every part of a building – inside and out.
If the owner of a listed building wishes to make alterations to the property, an application for planning permission must be made through the local council’s planning portal, in the same way as with any other planning application. However, additional planning controls apply. Carrying out unauthorised work on a listed building is a criminal offence.
